In Part 2 of my conversation with Dr. Ozzie Crocco, we talk about diversity dimensions. I use a metaphor of taking things off at the door.
The metaphor describes when you remove, suppress, or hide parts of yourself.
Sometimes we want patients to "take things off at the door" because it makes it easier for us. Your religion, sexual orientation, language, culture and so much more -- make up who you are. These components influence your views on health, illness, and treatment.
Earlier in the discussion, I mention two nursing cultural care models which serve as a good staring point for cultural competence in healthcare.
Cultural care models help healthcare providers understand the different perspectives of patients. They also increase self-awareness of a provider's beliefs that can influence their practice. Do you use another cultural care model not listed here?
Part 2 of our conversation. I was fortunate to meet and sit down with Dr. Oliver Crocco, Assistant Professor of Leadership and Human Resource Development at Louisiana State University, at the University Forum for Human Resource Development (UFHRD) Conference at Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom. We started talking about diversity intelligence, intercultural competence, and effective communication for his LHRD 7305 Cultural Competency & Diversity graduate course. It was an organic conversation -- completely spontaneous and unrehearsed! Dr. Crocco hit "record" on his laptop and we started talking. Join us for part 2 of the conversation.
