The Case For Getting Rid of New Year Resolutions

Hi there and Happy New Year!

It’s been 7 years since I made any type of new year resolution. All the research says most adults don’t keep any of their new year resolutions. That’s depressing. I can't tell you one resolution I made and kept. If you can relate, then keep reading.  If you love resolutions, I'm really happy for you.

I’m not going to bombard you with references on 20/20 vision, clarity or focus.  Although, I do think it is exciting to start a new decade.  Instead of resolutions, I choose one word. My sister told me to read the book One Word: That Will Change Your Life by authors Jon Gordon, Dan Britton, and Jimmy Page.

Every year since then, we each pick a word and focus on it.  Just ONE WORD for 365 days. Words are powerful. In the past, my words have been courage, time, simplify, relationship, and delight.  At the end of the year, it is always amazing to see how I lived my word.

For example, for 2013 the word was time. It was time to resign a job, accept a new job, move into a new house, and change schools for the kids.  It was the right time for significant change. My 2016 word was simplify. Well, moving to another state definitely helped me simplify and prioritize what our family really needed.  My word for 2018 was delight.  My husband and I went to Costa Rica. I totally delighted in new experiences I otherwise would not have chosen.  If I knew the Río Tempisque was filled with crocodiles, I never would have gotten on the boat!

What’s your One Word in 2020? What do you need more of in 2020?  What do you want to accomplish in 2020? What do you want to experience?  How do you want to feel?  What do you want to create?

With all that being said, I haven’t picked my 2020 word yet as I’m still reflecting.  Check out the website: Get the Word. They have great (FREE) resources that guide you in selecting your word and help you stay inspired by your word all year long.  I wish you more love, health and joy than you can ever imagine.

All the best in 2020!
