As a certified SWaM (Small, Women, and Minority-owned) business in Virginia, we are intentionally supporting other entrepreneurs doing amazing things this holiday season. We curated our appreciation gifts with businesses that identify as local or small, are women- or minority-owned, or have incorporated social impact as part of their business model.
We tell our clients to think about what is possible, yet we find we discount our impact if it isn’t considered something BIG. Impact occurs one interaction at a time or one dollar at a time. Consider spending your money with businesses like the ones featured below. My hope is that together we will make a positive difference in our communities!

The first Black-owned, nationally distributed coffee brand. Co-founders and friends, Pernell & Rod, grew up in Gary, IN and had a desire to unite coffee and tea lovers through a common interest of investing in community. BLK & Bold pledges 5% of its proceeds to nonprofit organizations across America that are aligned to pouring into children the confidence, exposure, and guidance for them to be the best version of themselves. I am thrilled to see their new partnerships with the NBA and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever!

Creates job opportunities for those who have experienced barriers to employment through their renowned, inclusive Open Hiring® policy. Greyston Bakery is a certified B Corp, which means their efforts significantly benefit their local community. When you order from Greyston Bakery, you further the message of inclusive employment through the work of their parent organization, the Greyston Foundation. When I read their motto, I got my credit card, and ordered brownies: “We don’t hire people to bake brownies - we bake brownies to hire people.”

Started by Hope and David, parents of Henry and Hudson. As a family owned, small business, they began selling small batch granola at a Charlottesville, VA farmers market. A 5-times SoFi Winner (Oscars of the food industry!), their granola has zero artificial ingredients, preservatives, or flavors. They use organic coconut oil and chips, and are non-GMO certified. They donate a percentage of revenue through their social impact program, small + mighty, to organizations like Franciscan Bread for the Poor and Meals on Wheels. I’m glad to support another Virginia-based business!

Started by Bonnie Schmidt and Denise Anderson based on a mutual love for their daughters with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). ScentsAbility provides adaptive strategies to ensure adults with I/DD have a sustainable income and life skills to help them thrive. Their candles are produced with the finest fragrances, a proprietary soy wax blend, and 100% cotton wicks that are non-GMO, non-toxic, and eco-friendly. Co-branding with artisans in my hometown of South Florida made this one really special to me. “Buy A Candle. Change A Life.”

Founded by Amanda Phung, Tierrapy Soaps is a women- & minority-owned, small business in Richmond, VA. I met Amanda at a farmers market and loved her smile and energy. During the pandemic, Amanda became enamored with the creative process and flexibility in controlling ingredients in her skincare routine. As a lifelong swimmer with eczema, she has suffered from dry, cracking skin. Amanda makes vegan cold process soaps and 100% soy candles. The passion that started as a craft turned into a business to help sensitive skin and reduce plastic consumption.
