6 Components of an Inclusive Workplace

What are the components of an inclusive workplace?  How do employees experience their environment and culture?  What does it look like?  Feel like? Below are six components of an inclusive workplace culture.

  1. Safety – when an employee feels psychological and physical safety.
  2. Involvement in the Work Group – when an employee is treated like an insider and has access to critical information and resources. This is an ingredient for the feeling of belonging.
  3. Feeling Respect and Valued – when an employee is treated as an appreciated and esteemed member of the group and organization.
  4. Influence on Decision Making – when an employee feels they contribute influential ideas and their input is listened to.
  5. Authenticity – organizational support of transparency and sharing of valued identities. This is an ingredient for valuing uniqueness.
  6. Recognizing, Honoring, and Advancing of Diversity- employees perceive fair treatment, sharing of employee differences for mutual learning and growth, and leaders show their value for diversity through words and actions. This also means removing barriers, developing, promoting and ensuring pay equity for traditionally excluded identity groups at work.

This is another great journal article by Dr. Lynn M. Shore and colleagues!
