3 Takeaways from NHIA 2019 Annual Conference

Last week, I spoke on how to Interrupt Unconscious Bias to Create High Performing Teams at the National Home Infusion Association Conference in Orlando, FL. Here are 3 key takeaways:

1. It was a full circle moment to be at a home infusion conference. Many people don’t know I had a severe form of morning sickness, called hyperemesis, with two of my pregnancies. For one pregnancy, I had a subcutaneous (under the skin) catheter in my thigh that would infuse a constant supply of medicine to lessen the nausea and vomiting. My husband refers to that time as “the dark days.” The nurse referred to me as “a home infusion patient.” I am reminded of how grateful I am for all the clinicians and staff involved in my care.

2. I realized how far I’ve come regarding post-presentation feedback. Now, I am very clear when I receive constructive feedback versus a term I call “projection feedback.” Projection feedback is when people project their own issues, biases and stereotypes on you and/or your presentation. You walked in with your baggage (we all did) and it is up to you to deal with it, not hand it to me to carry.  Don’t run away from discomfort or project your discomfort on someone else, rather lean into it. Ask questions, be humble, and keep learning!

3. It is always good to be in Florida as it is my home state. Regardless of traffic or heat, home is home and affinity bias is real.
